Geroni-NO!

Well, crap. Matt Smith has just announced he's leaving Doctor Who.

We all knew this day would eventually come. After all, Doctors have been coming and going for fifty years now. I'm going to miss him though.

I was a big fan of previous Doctor David Tennant and when he announced he was leaving I was honestly depressed about it for a week. I didn't see any way that anyone could possibly replace him. Fortunately Matt Smith came on board and won me over before the end of his first episode.

Smith has the amazing ability to portray a genuinely old soul; even though he looks young, there's something about him that gives the impression he's incredibly ancient. That's not an easy thing to pull off.

Smith will star in the upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special this November and then will regenerate into his new form in the annual Christmas Special in, of course, December.

As far as I know, that's all we're going to see of him from this point on. There were previous reports that he'd be back for Season 8 but it looks like those plans have changed. Due to the cockamamie way the BBC runs the show, they probably won't begin filming Season 8 until the end of the year or in early 2014.

Now that Smith's announced his departure, it's time for the crazy town rumor mill to start up again. Look for lots of stories in the upcoming months about how the next Doctor will be a woman, or black, or a black woman, or old, young, gay, twins, a donkey, etc.

I hate to see Matt Smith leave the show, but it's just par for the course. If you don't like change, then Doctor Who is not the show for you.

  1. Called it :/

Matt Smith has been absolutely, consistently amazing throughout his tenure, as you say, he embodies the young/old dichotomy perfectly, he can be very funny one minute and break your heart the next. He brings a beautifully awkward physicality to the role, I wasn't sure I'd like his doctor but the second he emptied that glass of water in little Amelia Pond's bedroom I was sold. He'll be greatly missed.

But as you said, if you can't handle change, then Doctor Who isn't for you. I look forward to the announcement of the next actor to take on the mantle, I only hope the Beeb has the balls to finally give us a Doctor who isn't white, but of course, acting ability comes first. Matt Smith raised the bar :)
